my pregnancy journey...yummy mummy is here!

It's been approximately 2months since I did my Ellen DeGeneres style dance out of hospital and back home!! For those of you who don't know ...i had a lovely baby boy Aaron in September, 8pounds 6...

He is *so* adorable, a real blessing.... I've now recovered from the trauma, somewhat regulated my sleep pattern, stitch's all healed up (TMI...HAHA)and am ready to blog again...

My Pregnancy...a synopsis

First Trimester

So I'm thinking, either i have a urine infection (constantly going to the bathroom) or i need to take a pregnancy test. All I knew was that something wasn't as normal, and low and behold, i was pregnant! we where kinda planning it, but i didn't think it would happen that fast (what do i mean by kinda planning lol...i know what i mean!)... I experienced a mix of emotions... happy, grateful, but also thinking omg! my life is sooo over....!

I didn't really have any cravings at that point, just really knocked out,i could literally sleep for the whole day, it was a cloud of heaviness over me, like Ive never been that tired before, i couldn't function!....To top it off i suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum which is basically excessive morning sickness, vomiting twice, thrice a day..not cool! Imagine eating, and throwing it back up 15mins later, all the time!

Above is a my brother and i at the Ghana v England match on the 29th of March! The next day i went to hospital with painful cramps, that progressed into bleeding, that progressed into crying..before this point i wasn't so attached to the idea of being pregnant, it was still early days,still overwhelmed, not quite hit home yet (i have delayed reactions alot...) but when in hospital,i nearly broke down with the thought that i could be losing my baby,i really did think i was having a miscarriage. Scary time. Only by God's grace.

Second Trimester

I was bridesmaid for my cousin Gemma! not a good look, the disconnection between my mind and body...the tiredness returned! I was anaemic by this point, just really really worn out! Great wedding tho!

By the end of the trimester, i was big, couldn't really sleep at all, as i started to get really severe heartburn, ouch ...the wonderful memories...(blank stare) my skin looked great none the less, and i had developed a love for all things Cheese and Tomato...and canned pineapples, it was so funny, like that was all i wanted..all the time..

Third Trimester

Diagnosed with gestational diabetes, which was really annoying as i had to take my blood sugar 4times a day and always see the consultant in hospital, which itself is a long boring process...always seeing the midwife, piercing me every moment!taking metformin every moment... yikes....it seems like I'm complaining, and at the time i didn't really moan, just internalised the whole experience, as i didn't want to seem ungrateful, pregnancy is a blessing after all...but gosh, it was just getting too much! i just wanted baby out! pregnancy and Teiko don't mix.I kept staring at women with more than one child thinking, why would you go through this..

Very hormonal, and crying alot, and wow the road rage..poor drivers...and people kept asking whether I was sure im not having twins...urmmm like seriously..really?? ..(blank stare..sigh)...ohh the memories ;-)

I did a photoshoot, it was really fun (my facial expression may suggest otherwise) but really it was fun..i think in that photo i was still about 3 weeks away from having Aaron...

It was hard to walk, and i felt so heavy, and my skin went from beautiful glow, to mild acne(i want a clarisonic plus for Christmas;-)... I was kinda anxious, i read way to much information, and went on way too many pregnancy forums, so i had all kind of things going on in my head! i kept saying..what if...what if...what if..read this! ohmygosh she had a 10lb baby..ohmy gosh they cut her open..ohmygosh they left her on the labour ward to deliver her own baby..and such..I must have been so annoying (poor husband) haha..

This picture was a few days before I was induced, we went to a friends wedding, i had just done my weave like a day before (bad bad bad idea!) I had initially chosen braids to be my "birth hairstyle" but after one braid, I was too impatient to sit there for hours and hours and changed my mind and went for the weave..it was so tight..bad move!plus I was sooooooo unbalanced, its funny looking back how much your body has to adjust for you baby. Aaron pressing down and me just about managing to roll out of bed...! My pregnant face in full force! And of course my raging hormones,

Tests before I was induced, to check baby, and I. Had to be strapped up for about an hour.In the end my labour was only 3 hours long, really painful,just gas and air! Childbirth is the worst kind of pain! But bravo i got through it! And you do kind of (i said kind of) forget the (majority) of the pain! When you see your baby, its all worth it..the most amazing moment seeing him, God is amazing!

At the time pregnancy felt like one of the worst periods of my life!plagued with all kinds of complications..But God is so faithful! Prayer was enough! He is such a good little baby, and he has made me a far more patient woman. And also increased my faith, every time I look at him I realise how wonderful God is for my gift! He is so worth every moment of discomfort I felt. Coming home was nice, but a shock, I am still exclusively breastfeeding, and have only expressed once, meaning i have not had a full night sleep since, meaning "zombie mode" is a frequent occurrence...my church cooked dinner for us everyday for two weeks when he was born(thank u ladies), which was so great because i got into a nice routine with Aaron and enjoyed some amazing food!

Its just really wonderful being a mother.

This October, women everywhere join together globally to raise awareness of the reality of Breast Cancer. We need to continue to be vigilant and aware that Breast Cancer unfortunately continues to take the lives of millions of women around the world annually, it does not discriminate!

Whether or not you know of anyone who has unfortunately been affected, as a woman it is essential you check your breasts on a regular basis....

..it is in your best interest to seek urgent medical attention if you notice anything unusual as early as possible, as early detection can mean the difference between life and death. It is said that if a breast cancer is detected early, it is 98% curable.

Look out for these signs...

* a change in how the breast or nipple feels
* nipple tenderness
* a lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm area
* a change in the size or shape of the breast
* a nipple turned slightly inward
* the skin of the breast, areola, or nipple may appear scaly, red, or swollen
* may have ridges or pitting
* nipple discharge

Cosmetic giant Estée Lauder's spokeswoman, British bombshell Elizabeth Hurley, raises awareness for the cause. Elizabeth, whose own grandmother died of Breast Cancer is a worthy role model! No doubt we will be purchasing some pink goodies!

OPI have also launched a "Pink of Hearts" range to mark the month. Its high gloss and chip resistant and is a brilliant way to light up the gloomy October days!

There are also events/initiatives taking place globally....

GHANA

More than 2,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in Ghana every year.

Dr Beatrice Wiafe-Addai, is the Chief Executive Officer of Breast Care International, a non-governmental organisation dedicated to the establishment of Breast Cancer centres throughout the country. She states that "a woman dies from the disease somewhere around the world every 68 seconds".

If you are in Accra towards the end of the month, Hype Prodcutions have organised "Red Lipstick", a concert consisting of all female African artistes. They will be performing at the Dome on October 29th, with a percentage of the proceeds going towards raising funds towards the cause.

NIGERIA

Burlesques Princess, and the Pink Pearl Foundation have teamed up to create CAMP DIVA! A course which will be offered to female cancer survivors and their friends and family. The class will incorporate dance and empowerment exercises as featured in our regular programming and also a tailored group routine specific to the participants.

Recognising the effects both physically and emotionally on not only the diagnosed but those friends and family who provide support though the difficult journey cancer presents, the class offers participants the opportunity to bond while having fun releasing their inner ‘Diva’. Camp Diva aims to empower women through mental and physical health promotion and reinforce positive self esteem.

The sessions will take place on the mornings of October 27th- 29th 2011 in Lagos Island, and will be free to all participants. However, due to a limited number of space, participants are asked to pay a fully refundable amount of N1,000, which will be returned at the start of the sessions. If you log onto P&G's My Black is Beautiful site, www.myblackisbeautiful.com you can read the stories of four breast cancer survivors, like Kelly Broussard.

Broussard was only 22 when she discovered a lump under her armpit, she illustrates that Breast Cancer can strike at any age. We thank God she is now all clear after two lumpectomies and radiation treatment.

my Pageant Queen...

i love beauty pageants, eye candy really.. although i mustn't forget that talents, skills and other non physical factors are important when deciding on the winner.....pageants have been going on since the 1800s and it seems like there aint no stopping them...

so....i was delighted to hear that my cousin Raquel is a contestant for Miss Ghana UK 2011! i have mentioned her before in a blog entry cos shes super smart, organised and talented, as well as a stunner! i asked her some questions to expose you to the beautiful Miss Raquel Larnyoh!

Tell us about yourself and why you want to b ms Ghana 2011?

My full name is Raquel Nueki Larnyoh, I am 21 years old, I am entering my final year at the University of Essex where I am studying Bsc Marketing and Finance I also work part time in banking. I love acting and I am pursuing a career in this field; I recently secured my second professional role in a London- based theatre production which I'm really excited about as it is also a lead role.

I want to be crowned Miss Ghana UK 2011 as I am a true representation of the term 'UK born Ghanaian'. Not only can I relate to others like me who fall into this and similar categories- I have the necessary drive and proficiency to empower them to aspire to be a people greatness and change.
I am often faced with doubtful responses when I mention my career aspirations alongside my degree, but my love for business and drama affirms my chosen direction. I am a young woman of no limits and will be whatever I want to be and this is the sort of mentality I want to endorse to my generation.
My main interest is Ghana’s current economic growth and ensuring UK Ghanaians are equipped with the necessary skills and resources to be a part of this development. I believe this is essential in ensuring that Ghana is safeguarded from the negative effects that growth can bring.
For me Miss Ghana UK is way beyond a beauty pageant; I am not putting myself forward as the most beautiful Ghanaian in the UK in fact that can’t be done, those around me are often subjected to my constant boasting of Ghanaians being the most beautiful people. Instead I put myself forward as one of the many Ghanaian beauties across the UK, beauty not being defined upon just physical attributes but also substance.

What are ur 5 favourite things about Ghana?

• Peace and togetherness- I am very proud of Ghana’s peaceful land, amongst all our deep rooted cultures and customs from the numerous tribes, we still live in harmony. I love the fact that every elder is my Aunt or Uncle in Ghana; and how I can easily begin a conversation with people I have never met before, still receiving the warm welcome no matter where I go Ghana. It’s these sorts of values I want to ensure is upheld in the UK.
• Food- yes most Sunday’s you will catch me back at home from university for my weekly fix of mum’s fufu and light soup. I love pepper as well and eat sheeto with everything- at one point it was even used as the spread in all my sandwiches.

• Cloth- African fashion is one of my new found loves. I am always impressed by the infinite styles, patterns and colors depicted in our traditional wear.
• Market life- where anything and everything is possible, I always learn something new about Ghana at Makola market in Accra (no matter how freaked out I am by my peoples culinary tastes!).
• Nightlife- Central London hasn’t got anything on Accra on a Friday night believe me.

What activities and experience do u have that will assist u with the role of Ms Ghana?

Both my academic and performing arts background will assist me in the role of Miss Ghana. I feel my business mind gives me an edge allowing me to define a clear vision which I have already begun to execute. My acting also enables me to present myself accordingly to fit and adapt to any environment I may find myself in when having to represent Ghana. With these skills combined I am confident and can assure my competency in fulfilling the role of Miss Ghana UK.

What do separates u from the other contestants and how will ur contribution be different?

What differentiates me from the other contestants is that I am already putting my vision into action; my worst nightmare is to find myself making promises and not seeing them through. So under the guidance of Ghanaian Londoner’s Youth Entrepreneurs Program I am already developing my social enterprise where I am learning how to home in on all my ideas as to not try to do too much all at once. I also stress the fact that I am not offering a charity but the tools my generation need to achieve their goals and career aspirations which will inevitably create Ghanaians in a position of power to give and add value back to our homeland.

Fashion for the pregnant woman...

This weekend just gone was lovely! My husband (totally amazing and wonderful might i add...)celebrated his birthday on Sunday, and on Saturday we spent the afternoon underwear shopping for my ever expanding frame..Thongs never looked so big with extra material for the ol bump and bras sans the wired for mums to be, it spurred research into plus size/pregnant underwear...

I cannot stress the importance of good support when u have a fuller figure and especially pregnant-the extra weight can take its toll so be prepared!

There are a few golden rules one must observe when underwear shopping. Firstly is as obvious as it may seem, be sure to know your size, get measured to avoid long term back/shoulder problems! Also getting the right size will avoid skin spilling over look which can be unsightly and ruin the overall look of your outfit...

support and comfort rolled into 1...

Don’t think u have to compromise on style just because you are pregnant....I came across a lingerie company that specialises in underwear for pregnant women called "Cake" and I hope these images inspire u….its not all functional and frumpy when you are expecting a baby...

...I’ve now reached the stage of pregnancy where its pretty obvious...I’m heavy tired hot (apparently I am emotionally unbalanced lately. cough cough husband) and missed the memo concerning the burst of energy and enthusiasm you get once you pass the first trimester.....i have that pregnancy look...where my nose has expanded...and i just don’t look like me anymore...oh my! yikes I’m just embracing it and thinking of the day i see Lil Kicker...aka my baby!

On a more positive note...lucky for me the biggest part of my pregnancy is being spent in the summer months, which means I can really utilise on the maxi dress trend

I’m wearing loose clothes and am trying to combine comfort support and style... I’ve also looked at a number of women during their pregnancies to see how they managed to remain fashion savvy and chic. Here are some of my favourite looks..

Motherhood is a blessing indeed ....

On the food front, I’ve discovered that you can actually get tailor made food menus per trimester, so apparently as I’m now in my third trimester I should b upping my vitamin K content...My cravings for scramble eggs and brown bread have been replaced for pineapples and grapes...but i can allow more greens too...nb i still have two birthday cakes from Sunday that couldnt go to waste!..there is so much info out there its really interesting how there is a whole "pregnant" world of info and forums waiting to be discovered...! x Teiko & Co

hello

It has been approximately 6months since I last posted an update! Its seems like my life these last 18months continues to overwhelm me with new exciting life changing events... Combine a very professional burlesque routine, Raphael Saadiq (body parts) playing in the background and 4 inch stilettos and I'm glad to share with u all that I'm now expecting my first baby later in the year ;-)....

The first 3 months.... I have experienced what seemed like a series of evil symptoms from late night vomiting, to severe fatigue to deep sorrow, it really wasn't what I signed up for. I read all the books and knew what to expect but... do u ever really know until it hits u..the Dr said it was hyperemesis gravidarum ,I said it was cruel and unjust....

Fortunately for me after the 3rd month, my symptoms weren't so aggressive and have progressed to now being hungry all the time,cravings(scramble eggs and brown bread is he latest) painful leg spasms while I sleep, vomiting bile right after I brush..and seeing my figure 8 rapidly disappear to what now resembles the figure of Venus the god of fertility....

On the plus size..(no pun intended).. 3 baby scans later my husband and I have seen (and now felt) we have quite an active baby on our hands, and seeing the baby blowing bubbles and kicking around and having a good ol time in my womb has made the negatives worth it...I'm ready to blog again , or should i say we are ready... and if you haven’t noticed so much has been going on in the world of fashion esp fuller fashion...mainly all positive which is great...here are my top stories..

Fashion photographer Ellen von Unwerth and stylist by Giulio Martinelli won my seal of approval, with some of the most vibrant images Ive seen in a while...

...the June 2011 issue was followed by a break of the norm, with 3 very beautiful plus size models being featured on the front cover...it extends her quest to put a stop to anorexia and promote the positive body image which should all have of ourselves...shes states...'A growing number of readers are now asking to see – even in fashion magazines – a real world, made of real people who are not obsessed with staying thin, but are able instead to naturally accept and respect their bodies as they are.'..i love the black and white classic look and i know that its definitely a bold step in the right direction. Plus size models Tara Lynn, Candice Huffine and Robyn Lawley work their magic!

God is faithful and more magazine eye candy was published, two of my favourite female celebrities graced the covers of Vogue..keeping me a happy Teiko ..who would i be talking about, Beyonce and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan of course...

I never thought it would become a compliment to describe a woman as having an Apple Bottom, but times are ever changing, and the successful fashion brand founded by Nelly, Yomi Martin and Ian Kelly has launched a plus size division catering for...plus sized Apple Bottoms women obviously..these jeans are great for women of all shapes, but especially girls with curves...bigger hips amd smaller waist...

Stunning model Kai Morae is the face of the lastest campaign, Nelly states “A woman should not try to fit the clothes; the clothes should fit the woman!”...

She told Gloss magazine, "I feel like I can talk to most girls and let them know you can still have the confidence of a supermodel even though you’re not that size. FAT and BEAUTIFUL contest...well they certainly dont mince words....

Israel was host to beauty pagaent for women founded by modelling agent Esterica Nagid...women from all over the country went to the city of Beersheva to compete for the crown, you had to be at least 176 lbs to enter.... The winner for 2011 went to 23-year-old Russian-born Tanya Fayman.

The political science student stressed physical beauty was not the most important thing to her.

"The most important beauty is beauty of the soul, and beauty of the heart, not just beauty of the body and face," she said.

Previous winners include Moran Barannes who won the title in 2009..

Lastly i'll leave you with an event which i really wanted to attend held between June 16-18th..the full figure fashion week held in NY and hosted by Shanda Freeman. The two day event featured shopping, panels , workshops and more all centred around the industry...

The winner of this years contest to be the face of the fashion week was Nina Taylor who followed last years winner Rosie Mercado.

She is responsible for the organizations, continuing medical education program accreditation as well as managing an educational tool for Cancer and HIV physicians domestically and internationally.

i haven't blogged in like 6 months...sometimes in life u just need time out..... the main thing is that I'm back... and so much has been going on. Yes, as with every year there where highs, lows, fabulous unions, faded friendship, lots of growth periods.

1.give me 3 words to describe your personal style?

Quirky, Afropolitan and Vintage.

2. what are your influences?

My influences really i would wholeheartedly have to say my family first and foremost, I go through photo archives like lookbooks. I am a lover of the yester years like i aforementioned vintage, i love vintage fashion! My late grandmother and Mother are actually quite the fashion afficionados, my grandmother being quirky fun but yet demure, She's mainly influenced me with all the lovely accouterments she would have in collection. My mother has always been pretty much classic with great simple taste, classic ferragamo flats, uniform of linen outfits for the hot African sun and so forth. I actually remember my mother making me carry a louis vuitton backpack back in highschool and everyone laughed at me.....yes of course all that has changed since LV has NOW become a household name. My mother was good for those...linen checked shorts with lining, sigh Mother dear! I will let you know i've rebelled all of my mothers influence, though i've kept the pearls.

If it's style icon wise, it would have to be Jacqueline Kennedy, Bianca Jagger, Edie Sedgwick, Grace Kelly, Prince, Grace Jones, Dorothy Dandridge, Donna Summers, Mobutu (do not judge me) and Tanzania's own Bi Kidude.

3. Tell me about your African roots, and how this has influenced your style.

I am first and foremost a proud African, and a Tanzanian, born and raised in the coastal town of Dar-es-Salaam. Being on the coast of the Indian ocean, you are exposed to so many cultures as it is a melting pot. I actually refer to Kiswahili as the Cosmopolitan language of Africa, with heavy arabic derivatives and borrowing from Portuguese, German, Hindi and so forth, then you add the magic of Bantu and their you have it. i actually spend a lot of time exploring the Swahili coast fashions with pictures from the early 1900s to present, riveting. I also love how innovative Africans, i track fashion subcultures that exist on the continent for instance the Sapeurs of the Congo, and Smarteez of Soweto, along with that, i am often very much fasicnated with the Fashion state of style our African leaders were at towards the decolonization era golden years 50's and beyond. Boy, we have always been fly! I attribute my whole being to the fact i am African, how else would i have taste?! ; )

4 Do you have any favourite designers? who and y

Well for right now....I really really really love these up and coming African designers
SUNO NYC- of Kenyan Origin. For the simple fact they use vintage khanga pieces..so divine....it just speaks to my inner being!
Loin Cloth and Ashes by Anisa Mpungwe- Not to be biased but this is the best Tanzanian Designer out there right now, she is playful, thoughtful, smart and mega talented!
Chichia London- By another promising Tanzanian designer Christine Mhando who also uses the Khanga to create her ecclectic and quirky flirty dresses! i also love Mara Hoffman!

Also as of the last few days i have been obsessing over Maki-Oh (who i have to thank Oroma, editor of POP Africana for putting me onto her), whose garments evidently show you that every detail went thorough an intense creative thought process, it's definitely art! I also heart a lot of Mary Meyers work

I really have an unquenchable thirst for African creative talent, and that is what feeds and keeps me going. But if i were to namedrop some European counter parts hmmm it would have to be....hmmm... YSL, Chanel, Emilio Pucci !

5. Any style tips for plus size beauties?

Hmmmm....Go for it! whatever it is you've put together in your mind, but please do dress appropriately to compliment your figure. I would be lying if i said i had experience with this question, i just do and wear what i feel and want to wear.

6. have you ever faced any obstacles being a plus size woman, and if so how did you overcome them?

Hahaahaha people under estimating my athleticism (well back then), how i overcame them, I surpassed their expectations over and beyond. Or People just seem to think I have a low self esteem, like nooo i am perfectly fine in my mind body and soul. Also being curvy, you just learn to turn off all the lascivious comments that are ushered towards you, whether you are walking in the grocery store or down the street, I really wonder what goes thru the opposite sex's mind, oh wait...they don't think..Duh! Eureka : )

One thing, i find hard to do is shop, i am too small for the plus size stores and too big for the "normal" stores, whats the inbetween? forces me to get creative and do what i can with what i can and make it WORK! "Mekitdowatitdo!"

7. Tell me about how you stay so comfortable in you fuller figure?

You Know, i don't picture myself another way.....and people actually lecture me when i utter " I have to loose weight" they make it like i signed a contract to stay the way i am, which i am fine with..I just think i need to get in shape...you know...that's all.

8.how do you define a beautiful woman?

To be quite honest: Intelligent, self assured, bold, well-rounded and wise woman...now that there, is one beautiful lady!

9. your words of wisdom for blog readers?

Birthdays are always a good time to reflect, so on my birthday blog post i wanted to share a cause i believed in, Rights to Rights founded by the inspirational Catherine Hagan...Nothing is impossible....stay inspired, and thank you for the birthday wishes, God bless u all x Teiko

1. What is the Right to Rights Foundation all about?

Right to Rights Foundation is a Non profit Organization based and registered in Ghana, West Africa with the main aim of ensuring that the less fortunate in the country are given the opportunity to enjoy their basic human rights as outlined by the United Nations universal declaration of human rights.

2. Why did you begin the Right to Rights Foundation

I started Right To Rights Foundation in 2007 after I returned from a class trip from Chennai, India. On the trip we worked with Professor Swaminathan who is known as the Gandhi of our time – we worked with different Women Self Help groups to help them apply for microcredit loans, building curriculum for children that couldn’t afford to go to school etc.
When I returned to Tokyo ( where I attended university) I decided it was time for me to do something similar to what Professor Swaminathan does but to help the less fortunate in Ghana.

3. What are the main ideals and motivation of Right to rights foundation?

The Right To Rights Foundation team and I have been fortunate to accomplish what we have due to the opportunities we were given mostly because of our education. It is so sad to me sometimes to see people in Ghana who are so smart, but due to lack of opportunity to achieve their dreams are stuck in places where they shouldn't be.

Personally, I try to imagine what these people would be if they were put in my position and given the opportunities that I have had. This is the main driving force - obviously doing this kind of work doesn't benefit us monetarily, but the feeling we get from helping those we can is way more valuable.

4. You just celebrated your 3 year anniversary. Tell me about some of your accomplishments and setbacks if any in the last 3 years.

Wow, the accomplishments are a lot.

Well we are a registered foundation in Ghana, West Africa. We have partnered with great foundations including FIDA Ghana Chapter, FAWE Ghana, Compound Foundation etc. We have awesome celebrity supporters including Rhian Benson, Bre Scullark, Wale, Mario Winans etc. We were able to raise money for 15 girls from Nsaba Diaspora Senior High School in Nsawam, Ghana to continue going to school and so much more. I don't think we have had any major setbacks - things might not always go how we plan them to, but they always give rise to a new opportunity so we don't give those things much thought.

5. Tell me about the “Impossible is Nothing Campaign” and how it began.

Impossible is Nothing is part of Right to Right foundation’s Self esteem for girls campaign. This is a campaign in which girls in Ghana are encouraged to pursue the different careers they are interested in by various Ghanaian women who are making a difference in the different work they do. These women send motivational videos to the girls in Ghana explaining the obstacles they had had to overcome etc. to show that Impossible is Nothing.

The Self Esteem – Impossible is Nothing campaign came about when Right to Rights Foundation visited Nsaba Diaspora Senior high school, an all girls high school in Nsawam , Ghana. Most of the girls at this school seemed to think the best they could do (career wise) was nursing , they weren't looking beyond nursing. I think Nursing is great, but it definitely isn't for everyone and we want to show this with our Impossible is Nothing project.

6. Who benefits the most from Right to Rights Foundation?

Three years ago ( when the foundation was started) I would have answered this question by saying the least fortunate in Ghana benefit most, but now as time has gone on and Right to Rights has grown I think EVERYONE benefits from the foundation. There is no doubt that we definitely focus more attention on the ones who are less fortunate than us and therefore cannot cater to themselves fully. However with projects like the Self esteem / Impossible is Nothing , everyone benefits - as I like to say, you can never get too much good advise and I believe this is what these projects do , especially the Impossible is Nothing videos.

7. You have a range of talented, successful and inspiring people on board. Do you think having role models directly on board is an important part of Right to Rights Foundation?

Definitely, the main Right To Rights foundation team ( our core staff) is quite young, I started Right To Rights foundation when I was only 22 years old so we really took the direction of the people that know about the Non Profit world, fortunately for us, these people believed that our dream was a legitimate one and stood by us. As time went on and we grew up, we learned what to expect with Non profits etc, but we still utilize the genius minds we have behind us.

We are also lucky enough to have some celebrity supporters that believe in our cause , this definitely helps us especially with fundraising projects. Fortunately or unfortunately, we live in a world that even if a cause is good on its own, it seems better and more credible when there is Celebrity support.

8. How do they (role models) impact on local communities?

So far, Bre Scullark from America's next top model has been kind enough to answer questions people might have about life in general, accomplishing ones dreams, modeling etc. We are also working very closely with Ne-yo's foundation, Compound Foundation - don't want to give away too much information on that yet, but it will be towards education.

9. Tell me about the rights to rights involvement in the project in Haiti
and the Caribbean

Even though Right To Rights Foundation is a Ghana based Foundation aimed at helping the least fortunate in Ghana, we couldn't stand aside and watch what was going on in Ghana. We donated the little donations that we received in the month of January to Wclef Jean's foundation www.yele.org. We also worked closely with one of the friends of Right to Rights foundation Anedie ( who is from Haiti) to spread the word about volunteering, donating etc.

10. What are your long term goals for Right to Rights foundation ?

Right to Rights foundation hopes to promote all the basic Human Rights. We have started with Education - we hope to go on to Health, food, freedom etc. We really just want to make a priority what many people take for granted - once we see that we have made a difference in the lives of people, we will know that we have made a difference.

i decided to write up on age, last week my friend asked when my birthday was, and i snapped back at him proclaiming, "im happy and blessed and at least i have food and shelter..." urmm he was like ok then Teiko! but i realised i had to check myself, i mean i never thought i was so sensitive about my age?...i have friends who snap and say its rude to ask... and i hear really serious statements like.. "i cant believe i'm getting old"... "where did all the time go".... "at least you still look young" "i should be married by now"... slightly sad statements concerning the aging process...

i once read an article on how the traditional mid life crisis which occurs in your 40's has now shifted to a quarter life crisis where people in their 20's are facing internal struggles, debt clouding their dreams, thinking that ideal career would drop into their lap (often does not work that way) and being confronted with some bitter reality checks concerning friends... partners... and the truth about life not being one big party...

..Guess what? time waits for no one ....embrace life and its challenges which will inevitably arise at any age! Here are some older models i love... ive told myself that im going to celebrate gettin older - im way too blessed to be stressed!!! Enjoy!

Charlene Amankwah: Africa Fashion Week New York 2010

African Fashion Week is the latest buzz in and around fashion circuits, held in New York this July, it promised to give us the crème de la crème of African inspired designs the most talented the continent has to offer, with over 21 designers from Africa and the diaspora this is one not to miss..Major of New York City Michael Bloomberg will be opening the event and I couldn't pass by the opportunity to interview the shows youngest designer Charlene Amankwah.

1. How long have you been a fashion designer?

Literally all my life just not professionally. Designed lots of my own clothes and even custom designed garments I bought from the shops. But I've been professionally designing for almost two years.

2. What motivated to create your own collection?

It was what I was destined to do dreamt about it forever and did lots of sketches. One day, my dad and I had an argument about my supposed loss of interest in fashion and not long after that, I registered the company ;)

4. Tell me about how you got involved with the Right2Rights foundation?

Right to rights foundation...can I just say how amazingly inspiring that organisation is? It just makes you want to do more with your life for the girls back home. They need successful role models and right to rights gives them that and more. So back to the question, I went to primary school with Lady May (the founder) so that's the link. Lol. When she told me about it, I thought it was a fabulous idea and I'm happy to do whatever I can to support right to rights foundation.

5. How are the preparations going for ny, how many pieces are u showing?

I'm showing 20 pieces.

6. "Nothing is impossible"what does this phrase mean to you

It means exactly what it says. You can do all things especially when there's a will, as they say where there's a will there's a way. And above all, with God all things are possible. Without God, I would have never gotten to this point. And I believe with him I will get farther.

7. Has being involved with r2r altered your perceptions in any way? if so why

Not really. I have always been a fan of giving back in whichever way you can. But what right to rights has done has created the avenue for me to give back to the people my story as inspiration. Like I said, if I can do it, anyone can do it

8 Can you offer advice for budding designers?

Go for it. Its not easy but with determination, God and support from those who matter, anything can be done. Don't let anyone tell u u can't be a designer. You can if you want to.

9. Aside for being a fashion designer, you are also a student, tell me about that and how you manage to successfully combine the two?

University is stressful but at the same time its fun. I think for me because they are two different things, its easier for me to do both. I study law which is great and I study two languages that I absolutely love. I love the variety: law, languages, fashion... Its exciting and I'm focused and determined to succeed in all these areas so I do and with God I will continue to.

Its July, my birthday month! which means despite the disappointing football result last night, (Well done Ghana, you did me proud!!) its all things bright and wonderful from here on NOW!!! July has traditionally been vacation month, US Edition of Glamour Magazine recently featured a spread featuring plus size model Crystal Renn and alongside Alessandra Ambrosio, and Brooklyn Decker...

Behind the scenes...

Here are some of the pieces i found, hopefully givin you some insight into the types of shapes and cuts that flatter your figure and flaunt your curves! i also picked up some tips online which i hope prove useful!

1 If you’re small busted look for halter or bikini top swimsuits in lighter colors. And a plus size underwire swimsuit can help your bust by giving extra lift.

2 If you’re large busted you need support. Get strong straps that are wide rather than narrow as narrow straps will dig into your shoulders. Try a wrap or a surplice top.

3 If you’re a triangle shape get a swimsuit with a narrow belt and perhaps a wrap front. Go for wide shoulder straps.

4 If you have a long torso try a short tankini so that some of your belly shows to minimize the effect of your longer torso.

5 If you have short legs look for a style where the top of the legs is high up on your thighs to expose as much leg as possible.

6 If you have a belly that is larger than you would like try vertical stripes

7. If you have a wider waist avoid high neck suits and look for suits with a low cut curved neckline.

8 If you have broader shoulders use wide straps and designs which focus the appeal lower down, with perhaps great colors on a skirt bottom to give the illusion of wider hips.

now all you need is a beach! ;-) ....excuse the fact that most of the models are not plus size, but u get the drift im sure ...

1. give me 3 words to describe your personal style?

Comfortable, sexy and sophisticated

2.What are your influences?

I feel influenced mainly by my mood, if I'm happy I wear more colour, if I'm feeling sexy I wear more fitted clothing but I find that the older I grow, the more risks I take.

3.You are orginally from Spain, has your culture influenced your style in any way?

Most definitely. I like to wear my thick, black, wavy hair down, big earrings, dark reds (on my nails, lips or clothes) and colourful clothes. I'm very proud of my culture and let that show through. No castanets though!

4. Do you have any favourite designers? who and why?

On the high street I swear by Karen Millen as she does beautiful clothes that really suit my shape. For couture I'd have to go with Valentino or Elie Saab. Their dresses are just sublime.

5. Any style tips for plus size beauties?

Don't hide your body under layers of clothing. Learn which parts of your body are your best features and flaunt them. Make sure that you feel comfortable in what you wear, if it doesn't feel right, it will show.

6. Have you ever faced any obstacles being a plus size woman, and if so how did you overcome them?

I still face obstacles for being a plus size woman to this day but I let my personality do the talking. I have never let my size stop me from doing what I want to do and once you show your focus and strength, people see pass your size.

7. Tell me about how you stay so comfortable in you fuller figure?

As a younger person I never felt comfortable in my skin but as I grow older I'm more in touch with my femininity and care less about what other people might say. I take care of myself, exercise, eat right and keep active. I'm also a great believer in enjoying life, so I cultivate my relationships with friends and family so I feel very loved regardless of my figure.

8.how do you define a beautiful woman?

My concept of beauty is difference. I like to see exotic features, striking dress styles, original haircuts, anything that doesn't conform with society's ideal of beauty.

9. your words of wisdom for blog readers?

I am borrowing these words but I would say 'If you want your dream to come true, wake up'

ok so last year i was like , no more alcohol, not like im an alcoholic but i was kinda thinkin, ive outgrown my frivolous Uni student party ways, and it was one decision closer to becoming a responsible adult....i even had a conversation with my friend Martin about how cool it is to be the only sober person at a party...1 house party later i thought "who needs self imposed rules"...the Sex and the city movie night, pre arranged by my mates Kerrie and Mourine reminded me that some rules are actually worth sticking too! ....not quite sure what happened during that film, the last thing i remember was the cab driver telling me about the crazy drunkards on road, and me thinking...gosh i hope he hasn’t figured out there is 1 behind him!!... if any of u see me drinking, just make sure its juice!!!!

THE WORLD CUP if you haven noticed its fast approaching, lots media attention, lil bits i found on some of my fav ballers reminding us football capable of making positive changes not just eye candy (David Beckham...sigh ;-)

Lime and Ginger Salmon fillets with mozzarella and avocado salad
what u need

White and Milk chocolate chip muffins with double cream!!

it was really fun! to achieve this afternoon treat ....

4 salmon fillets (responsibly farmed)

for marinade...

1 lime
2 teaspoons of mustard
1 teaspoon of chilli powder
Herbs and spices
3 garlic cloves
Ginger (to your taste)
Sea salt

for salad
cos lettuce
1 avocado
mozzarella
1 red apple
½ red onion

Joy...

see below ;-) 400g self raising flour,200g caster sugar, 200ml vegetable oil, 400ml milk and white chocolate chips ...add liberally ;-)

all this can be achieved in a few easy steps...

Joys Muffins!

flour and sugar

add beaten eggs, oil and milk

pour and mix

tasty! Joy can cook..!

eat till u cant eat no more...

mix all the marinade ingredients and thin slices ginger

fry salmon for like 5 mins in lil oil and a lil marinade

pour the rest of the marinade and add lime

wrap and put in the oven for like 20mins med high

A couple of months ago, i used a "Anna Jeffries" creation in one of my shoots, she came round and i had a chance to ask her some brief questions! i hope you can also appreciate my fab photo shoot, in the snow with some faux fur and lots of love! Enjoy...

How long have u been a designer and how did you get into it?

I have only been designing for 18months. I taught myself to sew out of creative frustration. I had studded fine art painting at uni. When i completed my degree i lost all my drive. Designing and making is when i am my most happy!

What inspires you?

I am inspired by so many things. But there are two things that rock my world African prints, just love the colours textures and designs. I love it when my mother in law tells me there meanings! I also totally love 50's and early 60's design. Well cut clothes for women i mean real women with shape!

3 words to describe your personal style...

eclectic, pin up, classic ;-)

Do you have any style icons, if so who are they?

Oh i love people who dare to be outrageous with there style like Grace Jones, or the beautifully curvy January Jones from mad men!

What do you feel about fashion embracing plus size models, with recent feature in Vogue, V and high fashion magazines?

I think it is high time the catwalk embarrassed plus sized models. In my opinion clothes look amazing on a woman's figure. This obsession with in my opinion boyish figures is baffling to me! the idea is they are like a clothes hanger but i spend more time looking at the bony chests than looking at the clothes!

ok folks this is the last of my Ghana at 53...rd independence week of features im finishing off with a musician and i hope u love the feature....his name is Kobi! hes a ma z i n g here goes....

tell me about the kind of music you produce?

The music i make falls under the hip hop umbrella. It is a mix of the different musical genres i grew up listening to. Hip Hop, Pop, R&B, Highlife, Gospel and more. I try not to limit myself to the type of genres i make as a producer nor as an artist. I also try to keep it as honest as possible.

what inspires you?

Life inspires me. It's the only thing that's real enough to inspire me. I am inspired by my life and things i go through and achieve, and also other peoples life and what they go through an achieve. I am also deeply inspired by my family and team.

some of the most influencial people youve worked with.

Music wise, i've opened up for a lot of different artists, i don't know if you'd class that as working with them but i like to think so! Working with Sway and shooting the video for my last record He Said She Said was very inspirational. Sway is a great person and very hard working. Some of that rubbed off on me. Also, to think of where i've come from to making a record with Sway or sharing a concert bill with incredible artists is very influential.

formerly know as jae p what inspred your name chage to kobi onyame?

I just felt Jae P didn't represent me anymore and what i wanted to put across in my music. I needed a name that was original first and also meant something. The acronym Jae P (just another emcee, producer) also felt i was selling myself short. I'm not just another emcee or producer, I'm me. Kobi is an acronym for Kwame Osei Barfour Is... it is a play on my real name and Onyame as a second or surname means God and it just symbolises how close i want God to be to me and during my music career.

what has been the most memorable moment of your career thus far

I'd say rocking the BBC Introducing Stage at Glastonbury last year was amazing and the most memorable moment. Also, opening for Kanye West in front of 3000+ people was awesome!

any upcoming projects?

Right now i'm working on new music for an upcoming album. I've had a few names in mind for the project but keep changing it so i will keep the name under wraps till it's ready.

whats the name of your brand? how did you come up with the name of your brand

Deborah Vanessa is the name of my label. The clothes I design are clothes that I will actually wear myself. They represent me, my style and my personality, so I named the label after me and so Deborah Vanessa it is.

When was your brand established?

Deborah Vanessa has not been officially launched, but I started selling custom made designs in 2009, although I was designing my own clothes since 2003. However, I hope to launch the label soon as I have been getting a lot of people asking me about a fashion show and a launch. I am just waiting for the right time, the right feeling and the necessary resources.

Deborah Vanessa is for a free spirited, confident woman who wants to feel classy, sexy and comfortable at the same time.

Whats the name of your brand? and how did you come up with the name of your brand?

DIVA DELICIOUS, Diva because everything in the Accessories line is top quality and made for "high class" and delicious, because I want people to actually crave the bags.

When was your brand established?

I started Diva Delicious last year, in the beginning of 2008 , so about 2 years ago.

What inspired you to create it?
Well basically, I am a fashion addict; I love clothes, shoes, bags, jewelry etc, but unfortunately, I wasn't getting the stuff I liked here , so I decided to design and make my own bags - I started creating for myself, then my family, then my friends --and I thought, " I can actually make money out of this," so I decided to make an accessories line.

all designs are made by me, I sketch the craziest shapes, styles etc, but that is the best thing about Diva Delicious -- how unique and different it is from other brands.

What type of woman wear your bags?

Diva Delicious doesn't discriminate, everyone has a diva in them, so we target everyone from little girls to older women, that is one of the main reason we take custom orders, to be able to accommodate every one's taste.

Right now we are focusing on making Diva Delicious a brand that everyone recognizes and the feedback we are getting is AMAZING!! we are concentrating on the hats and bags hopefully to expand throughout Africa and but we are also currently sketching sunglasses and shoes.

Another year has come by and this week is filled with events/ acivities and parties all in aid of Ghana Independence Day! ( 6th of March...)..so over the next few days i'll be bloggin about my favourite "Ghanaian" inspired designers... musicians and friends...im starting of with the MY cosmetics range by friend (actually now ive married into the fam...its a Teiko invasion!! ;-) Yasmeen Helwani Nsiah, ceo of MY cosmetics and songstress with a the most amazing voice... here goes...

what inspired you to create it?

Ever since I was a child I had a keen interest in formulating. When I as a young adult, I would sometimes create my own body and hair applications. As I grew, I began to learn more and more about our changing world, and how mass-produced chemically loaded products are taking the place of quality hand-made and natural products. Aside from this, Ghana, where I live, is what I call 'beauty heaven' being the home of luxurious natural beauty ingredients like Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Coconut Milk, Palm Oil, Palm Kernel Oil, Papayas, Mangoes, Avocadoes, Neem Oil, to mention a few. While making my own body prescriptions, it ocurred to me that I shouldn't be keeping this all to myself. I needed to share the goodies with the world! That is how Madame Yasmeen was born.

What are the benefits of using your products?

All MY products are handmade by me in small, controlled batches to ensure the highest quality. Thanks to my location, MY products contain the best fair trade and organic ingredients enabling our customers to be pampered in an eco-friendly way. There is no need to worry about what toxic chemicals are present in our products. We do not use any harmful preservatives or chemicals. MY handmade and natural soaps are all made by 'cold process' that is, the soap is not cooked over heat, but is allowed to sit for 4 weeks to cure. This allows much of the nutrients to remain present in the soap for amazing skin care and conditioning. Our body butters are anhydrous (meaning water-free) and are made up of either Pure Shea or Pure Cocoa Butter, whipped with a tincture of essential oils. Madame Yasmeen body butters contain no preservatives and possess strong soothing, healing, and moisturizing properties for all skin types.

how do you combine your music career and your role as a business woman?

ok so im back from Ghana.i had to escape for a while... only been a couple of weeks back and im feeling the withdrawal symtoms.., slap on my wrist for complaining about the heat while i was out there, as i freeze over in London, i am officially eating my words!!! ....

Starting again this year is the WE GIRLS ROCK programme! its inspiring and refreshing and is a great way of providing information and steps to achieving your goals and making those dreams come true!

Its targeted at girls (hence the name riiiiiiiiiiiight?;) and it commences this Jan! Spread the word and get involved!

We Girls Rock is all about having fun while learning and performing new skills! We are here to support, encourage and educate you about different areas of work. We will provide Seminars and Courses where you can gain information and actively explore your desired type of work. We will run courses for aspiring, Radio and TV presenters, Singers, Models, Dancers, Fashion Designers, Footballers, Swimmers, Athletes, Comedians, Event Organisers, DJ’s and many more.

What do we do?

We organise Seminars with Top Experts and Celebrities for you to listen to their success story, while outlining their challenges and achievements; you will also receive useful information needed to progress in your career. You will then have the opportunity to sign up to unlimited number of courses where you can practice and learn new skills, while being taught by the Expert/ Celebrity. And it doesn’t stop there, you will then have the chance to perform your skills at a quarterly event, open to your friends and family scouts in that given industry and the general public.

So just that you understand: For all the girls dreaming of becoming a DJ, you will be invited to a seminar, where you will be given information about the ‘whole world of DJ-ing’ from a Top female DJ! You can then sign up to a short 1-2 day course where you can practice what you already know and learn new skills, using the equipment in a radio/music station! Then you and the other girls will have the chance to show off your new skills to your friends, family, and scouts in Dj-ing industry (Radio Station, Music Channels, e.t.c.) at a Top Exclusive Night Club!!

Who we are looking for?

We Are looking for Ambitious, Fun, Career Minded young women* who are wanting to learn more about their desired field of work.

It was a Saturday night, rainy wet windly and grey, yes all things British ;-) ... i went over to the mermaid theatre to watch the finals of Miss Black Britain, its aim was to highlight the achievements, beauty and talent of beautiful women....i met so many beautiful girls, i really loved their attitude and although there was only one winner, they are all inspiring and worthy of the crown....

ok so this weekend my friend Wanlov is performing ...and then on sunday im hosting a fashion show with designs from N'Kay designs, i love supporting up and coming designers and i met her in Ghana last year! so creative! ...so basically i thought i would tell u abit about her via an interview she did on another blog..(is that like a violation of the blog code of ethics)...taken from http://ciaafrique.blogspot.com.

Ciaa:Tell us a little bit about yourself
Sheila:I am a British born Ghanaian who has lived in both countries long enough to appreciate what they have to offer. I am currently based in London.

Ciaa: how did you get into designing?
Sheila: It started off as a hobby really and the excitement grew from there, I definitely did not set out to get into this the fashion world but am glad I did.

Ciaa: What is the one thing that we should know about your latest collection?
Sheila: The current collection is aimed at the younger African generation abroad trying to get in touch with their roots via the African fabric....so its wild and unexpected.

Ciaa: What motivate you to keep going ?
Sheila:Knowing that there are a lot of people out there doing the same thing as me and its up to me to make sure I stand out and be the best I can.

Ciaa:Who is your target market?
Sheila:With my next collection I am looking to target the more mature African woman in the diaspora and all friends of Africa with cutting edge styles that will appeal to them.

Ciaa: When you create something, what goes through your mind?
Sheila:The main thing I think about is "will people see this the way I do??" I try as much as possible to make my vision clear to people so I Mainly think of the best possible way to achieve that.

Ciaa: What is your personal style?
Sheila: I actually do not have a personal style and just go with the flow depending on how I am feeling, It can be floaty dresses and flats one day to slim fitting jeans with high heels the next.....very unexpected.

Ciaa: That is Great because I love to be versatile as well, now there are a lot upcoming designers of African descent in London ,what makes your line different ?
Sheila: There is definitely a lot of emerging designers in this field but we all have different outlooks, N'kya is different in the sense that its not just aimed at Africans but anyone looking to get in touch with our continent and get an idea of what the people are about regardless of where they are from. Hence our motto...'A sense of Africa, a touch of you..'

Ciaa: If you had to pick Any star ( S) to wear your designs who will it be?
Sheila: Gabriel Union, the American actress.
Ciaa:Who is your favorite African designer ?
Sheila: Xuly Bet ( Mali)

Ciaa:When do you hope to be in the next coming year.
Sheila: I would like to be Able to showcase my designs at the various fashion weeks in Africa and beyond.

Ciaa:Where and how can Ciaafrique Readers buy your designs?
Sheila:At the moment most of my sales are done from home but our website should be up and running soon which should make it easier to locate our team. I am a phone call away...

hmm first it was the controversial Glamour shot that caused a stir, now model Filippa Hamilton, a 5'10 Swedish beauty claims that Ralph Lauren fired her for putting on weight! "They fired me because they said I was overweight and I couldn't fit in their clothes anymore," she said.ouch...i think we would all agree that Filippa Hamilton stunning....the Japanese version of her ad was clearly photoshoped...

ok...big difference... Geoffrey Menin, her lawyer ... "gross distortion of how she really looks and which we fear will be extremely damaging to her."

and not surprisingly Ms Hamilton wasnt too pleased..."I think they owe American women an apology, a big apology," she said. "I'm very proud of what I look like, and I think a role model should look healthy."

how could this happen... noticed the little horses on the Ralph Lauren tops got way bigger...i guess his models didn't follow suite! oh well his loss! what a shame!

Today is the premier of one of my favourite childhood storybooks..."Fantastic Mr Fox"...starring the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, Michael Gambon, Owen Wilson, Helen McCrory, Willem Dafoe, Jason Schwartzman, Adrien Brody, Wes Anderson, Brian Cox, Roman Coppola.. and directed by Wes Anderson...so i thought i would take the opportunity to highlight Ms Dahl...who began her career as a plus size model but has recently published her very own cookbook, appropriately entitled "Miss Dahl's Voluptuous Delights"..

an extract from the book...she talks about food, fashion and fame..always a good combination!

"When I began modelling I was completely unprepared for the onslaught of curiosity it carried with it. People had noticed me. Big women from all over the world wrote me congratulatory letters commending my big

....So in the uk at the moment its Black history month...quote...a remembrance of important people and events in the history of the African Diaspora. It is celebrated annually in the United States and Canada in February and the United Kingdom in the month of October... i think its always good to embrace , celebrate and learn from the past..recently whilst going to top up my oyster card (on my grind...the limo was being serviced?!hmm kay ;-) i saw like at least 4 front black cover models/celebs...which was a lot , probably the most ive seen in a month, i actually have no idea if this coincides with the BHM, also I’ve read conflicting information about editors reluctant to feature Black females on the front covers because of sales , Naomi recently spoke out on the issue but for now, I’m gonna keep it light hearted and post my all time favourite beautiful cover women...credit when credits due! rock on! ..

so last night i went to see my sister Abigail, who has just had a new baby, like im totally in love, hes sooooooooooooo adorable, my lil KohKoh, (his name is Kofi Soloman...) but im stickin to Koh....hes just adorable...then i went to Kerries and saw this amazinly funny dvd...Knocked Up, gosh its the funniest movie, she was like asleep and it was me1 crackin up! ...im away from my bed! like woke up 3 hours ago, my body clock has trained itself to think wakin up early is always a good thing....

Anyway ive calculated that anything goes nowadays, can u marry your nephew (in some cultures right.?..age difference.?.Jesus-good enough for Madonna good enough for me... move over boyfriend theres a new guy in town...it was love at first sight ....:-)

Above is a picture of the beautiful Anna Schloz, she has been a committed inspiring and established plus size designer for over a decade now, its every models dream (well at least mine!) to model her clothes and with the launch of her new website amd her amzing new collection its apperent why!

1) Anna you have been successfully designing for over 10 years, and your collections continue to go from strength to strength, how did you begin your career in fashion?

I started a sewing class when I was 13 as I was already 6ft tall and wore a size 12US and I could never find any young and fashionable clothes to buy. After sewing courses came pattern cutting courses and eventually I moved to London to study at St. Martins College. I set up my own label in my last year of college.

2) You are a very beautiful woman, and have been a successful plus size model in the past, tell us a little about your experience as a plus size model? What where some of the highlights of your career?

Thanks for the compliment! I didn’t enjoy being a plus size model very much to be honest as I had to model such ugly frumpy clothes (plus size fashion was much worse 15 years ago). I was never very good at hiding my dislike for the pieces I was wearing and always thought that I could certainly do this better. I did however shoot an Anti Aids campaign for condoms which was great fun and I was on billboards all over Germany.

3) Looking at your new website www.annascholz.com its is clear that you have a range of influences that go into your pieces, (esp the tropical collection which is a personal favourite!) how are you as a designer inspired?

The streets of London are truly inspiring , the fashion here is very creative and individual. So people watching is one of my favourite past times. I especially love everything vintage and visit Portobello market frequently for great finds.

4) As a designer you work closely with models and agencies, do you think there has been an increase for plus size models, or do you think its still a niche market?

There are a lot more agencies now with great plus size models.
We are always looking for new faces . This niche market is growing!

5) What are some of the most exciting things happening in the industry right now?

The credit crunch is difficult but also a cleansing process. I believe that some of the frumpier and out of date businesses have to go and we can focus on the new and exciting. I can feel an upswing already and sales for spring are very strong. We have just taken on Saks Fifth Avenue as a new online customer which is very exciting to us.

Our new much more sophisticated online store has opened!

6) What type of woman do you think your brand appeals to?

Hopefully not only one type of woman....but a curvaceous woman who loves fashion and is interested in making herself look and feel great. We really have an amazing variety of customers and I love dressing women of all ages, cultures and sizes.

7) You are originally from Germany, but reside in London, tell us some of the things you love about London?

London is very cosmopolitan. I love the multi-cultural society and the different influences in the city.

8) What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love traveling and seeing different cultures. My last big trip took me to China to Thailand where I combined work with holidays. very inspirational.
I am also in love with my new puppy Frida and my boyfriend and me love walking in London’s parks with her. We have a great circle of friends who we see nearly every weekend.

'If you are bored in London, you are bored of life'

There is something for everybody.

9) tell us about one of the most exciting points of your career thus far?

Moving into our new big offices in December was a highlight as working in here is so much nicer.
Selling to stores like Saks , Neimans and Harrods is a great feeling as my designs get appreciated.

10) Lastly, where can we find out more about your pieces?
